Overview and current position

Sony ULT FIELD 3 is the current mid-sized portable model in Sony's ULT POWER SOUND range, sitting above ULT FIELD 1 and below the larger FIELD 5 and FIELD 7. It replaces the older SRS-XE300 position with a more conventional rectangular cabinet, a detachable shoulder strap and a dedicated ULT button for bass emphasis. The result is aimed directly at outdoor listening, gyms, holidays and rooms where strong low-frequency impact matters more than neutral studio-style balance.

The internal layout combines Sony's non-circular X-Balanced main driver with a tweeter and passive radiators. It is fundamentally a single-speaker presentation rather than wide physical stereo, although two compatible units can form a stereo pair. The cabinet weighs around 1.2kg: portable enough for the strap, but too large to disappear into a small handbag or coat pocket.

Sound, app features and wireless linking

ULT mode increases bass weight and perceived impact. It is effective with electronic music, pop and hip-hop outdoors, where low frequencies are easily lost, but can make vocals and acoustic recordings sound thick. Sony's Sound Connect app provides equaliser adjustment and firmware updates, allowing the standard mode to be shaped more conservatively. As with every compact speaker, deep bass falls as volume approaches the physical limit, and strong processing cannot create the extension of a larger woofer.

Bluetooth multipoint allows two source devices to remain connected. Party Connect can synchronise a large group of compatible Sony speakers, and Stereo Pair can assign left and right channels to two matching units. Compatibility is family- and generation-dependent, so buyers should not assume that any older Sony Bluetooth speaker can join. The model also supports hands-free calls through its built-in microphone, unlike JBL Charge 6 and Bose SoundLink Max. Call quality depends heavily on distance and background noise and should not be treated as a conference-room microphone.

There is no Wi-Fi, AirPlay or Spotify Connect, and no analogue input. It is a Bluetooth speaker first. Codec and phone support can vary by region and firmware, so the safest buying assumption is standard Bluetooth playback rather than guaranteed high-resolution wireless audio from every handset.

Battery, charging and outdoor durability

Sony advertises up to 24 hours of battery life, plus fast charging that can provide roughly two hours of playback from a ten-minute charge under specified conditions. ULT mode, high volume, lighting or call use, cold weather and battery ageing reduce endurance. Sony also provides battery-care settings intended to limit maximum charge and slow long-term degradation. These are useful for frequent mains use but can reduce the runtime available on a particular trip.

The speaker is promoted as waterproof, dustproof, rust-resistant and shock-resistant, with IP67-class protection. Those claims describe controlled tests, not unlimited abuse. A salt-water visit should be followed by a fresh-water rinse and thorough drying, and charging ports must be dry before connection. The detachable strap improves carrying but should be checked before lifting the speaker over hard surfaces.

The USB-C connection charges the speaker, and the battery can also supply power to a phone on supported configurations. Power-bank use shortens music playback. A charger may not be included in every retail bundle, so buyers should inspect the box contents rather than assuming a mains adaptor is supplied.

Value and verdict

ULT FIELD 3 is the best fit here for buyers who want a current, rugged mid-sized speaker with a shoulder strap, strong bass and long quoted endurance. It is less suitable for neutral listening, Wi-Fi streaming or the lightest travel setup. JBL Charge 6 is more versatile through USB digital audio and Auracast; Bose Max sounds larger but costs and weighs more; UE BOOM 4 is easier to carry and floats but has less bass depth.

The main caution is to use ULT mode as an option rather than proof of universally better sound. Buyers should also treat 24 hours as a laboratory-style maximum and check Party Connect compatibility with any existing Sony speakers. Within those limits, FIELD 3 is a practical outdoor speaker with unusually useful carrying and charging features.
