Overview and legacy position
Fitbit Versa 4 is a lightweight square fitness smartwatch released in 2022. It provides built-in GPS, heart-rate and sleep tracking, Google Wallet, Google Maps directions, notifications and more than forty exercise modes with a quoted multi-day battery. It remains available in 2026, but it is legacy hardware rather than the centre of Google’s smartwatch strategy. Google has moved premium smartwatch development to Pixel Watch, while Fitbit-branded hardware has focused more heavily on trackers and the broader Google Health platform.
Versa 4 works with compatible Android phones and iPhones, making it more flexible than Apple Watch, Galaxy Watch or Pixel Watch. Cross-platform support does not mean full smartwatch parity. It has a limited app ecosystem, no LTE version, no onboard third-party music storage and fewer advanced sensors than Fitbit Sense 2 or modern Pixel Watches. Buyers should approach it as a comfortable fitness tracker with a watch-shaped display rather than a miniature phone.
Tracking, subscriptions and health limits
The watch tracks steps, heart rate, sleep, stress indicators, blood oxygen trends, Active Zone Minutes and GPS workouts. It does not include the ECG and continuous electrodermal-activity sensors found on Sense 2. Some readiness, coaching and historical insights have depended on Fitbit Premium, and Google’s 2026 transition toward Google Health and renamed subscription services means plan labels and included features can change. Check the current app and entitlement screen rather than relying on an old retail box.
Fitbit’s sleep stages, calorie burn, stress and readiness scores are algorithmic estimates. They can support habit changes but should not be interpreted as medical diagnoses or exact metabolic measurements. Wrist heart-rate accuracy changes with band fit, movement, temperature, skin contact and activity type. Blood oxygen trends are not a substitute for a clinical oximeter. Users with symptoms should seek medical advice regardless of a reassuring watch result.
Battery, GPS and daily usability
Fitbit quotes more than six days of battery life, but continuous GPS, always-on display, frequent notifications and high screen brightness shorten endurance. It still lasts substantially longer than most Apple or Wear OS watches and fast charging can provide a useful top-up. Built-in GPS allows phone-free route recording, although accuracy can vary around buildings, trees and poor satellite conditions. Syncing, maps and most connected functions still rely on the paired phone and Fitbit or Google Health app.
Google Wallet support depends on participating banks, and on-wrist Maps directions are simpler than a full mapping app. Bluetooth calls require the nearby phone and are intended for brief use. Water resistance supports swimming under the manufacturer’s conditions, but the watch should be dried and cleaned after exposure. Replacement bands are widely available, though purchasers should check that older Versa accessories fit because Fitbit changed attachment designs across generations.
Value and verdict
Versa 4 is best for someone who wants a light, easy-to-understand tracker, multi-day battery and compatibility with either iPhone or Android. It is less suitable for buyers seeking ECG, a rich third-party app store, offline Spotify, LTE or deep sport analytics. Garmin Venu 3 is stronger for training and battery, while Pixel Watch offers a much fuller Android smartwatch experience at the cost of daily charging.
Because Versa 4 is several years old and Google’s wearable strategy has shifted, price and support expectations are crucial. Compare it with Fitbit Charge 6, current Google Health trackers and discounted Pixel Watch models. A low price can make it a friendly everyday tracker; a premium price is difficult to justify. Its catalogue copy should state clearly that it is a legacy Fitbit smartwatch, not a new generation in active annual development.
