Quick answer

Our recommendation in brief

Generic kits often miss the things a particular household uses every day. Make a separate list for each baby or pet and keep it alongside the family inventory.

Babies: build around established routines

Check nappies, wipes, changes of clothes and feeding equipment. Use the right sizes and avoid buying so far ahead that supplies become unsuitable. Food and feeding needs are individual; follow your usual professional advice.

The official checklist discusses ready-to-feed formula where appropriate, because safely preparing powdered formula may be difficult without the ability to boil water. This is not advice to change a baby’s feeding method. Follow feeding and storage instructions and seek professional advice for individual needs.

Pets: familiar food, water and equipment

Include the pet’s normal food, water and any routine supplies or prescribed treatment. Human drinking-water totals do not include pets. Work out their needs with your usual veterinary advice rather than applying one number to all animals.

Keep leads, carriers, bowls and identification information accessible. Practise using a carrier before an urgent move. Familiar supplies reduce the chance that an emergency purchase is the wrong size or type.

Avoid waste when buying in bulk

Check the total quantity, storage conditions and dates. Opened products may have different storage rules from sealed packs. A smaller pack can be the more practical choice when routines or sizes change quickly.
