TCL C8K Mini LED review
Overview and range position
The TCL C8K is a high-brightness QD-Mini LED television from TCL's 2025 range. It remains an important value model in 2026 even though TCL now sells more expensive flagship technology above it. The C8K's appeal is straightforward: it provides the brightness, gaming specification and broad HDR support associated with premium LCD televisions at prices that can overlap discounted mainstream OLEDs.
It is sold in several large screen sizes, but specifications such as dimming-zone count, speaker configuration, peak brightness and stand arrangement can change with size. A 65-inch review should not be copied directly onto a 98-inch purchase. Retailers may also use shortened names or omit the complete product code, so buyers should confirm that the listing is the C8K rather than a C7K, C855, regional QM model or another similarly named TCL television.
Mini LED picture and room suitability
The C8K uses a VA-type LCD panel, quantum-dot colour and a dense Mini LED backlight divided into many local-dimming zones. Its central strength is brightness. HDR highlights, daytime sport and colourful animation remain punchy in rooms that would make a typical OLED look subdued. The anti-reflection treatment and wider-angle panel design improve flexibility compared with basic VA televisions, although contrast still falls away off-axis more than it does on OLED.
Local dimming cannot control every pixel independently. Bright subtitles, stars or lamps against black backgrounds may create halos, and the television can sometimes lift blacks or suppress small highlights to hide blooming. Zone count and algorithm quality matter, but headline figures are not directly comparable across brands or screen sizes. The strongest measured brightness modes can also be less accurate, raise power use and exaggerate colour. Movie or Filmmaker-style settings usually provide a more balanced starting point.
The C8K supports Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG, giving it broader format coverage than LG or Samsung's competing models. It also supports IMAX Enhanced and a Filmmaker Mode. Standard-definition broadcasts remain a challenge because strong sharpening and a very large screen expose compression artefacts. Motion settings should be adjusted carefully: some interpolation can help sport, while high settings can create a video-like effect in films.
Gaming, HDMI, Google TV and audio
There are four HDMI inputs, but only two provide the full HDMI 2.1 bandwidth required for the television's most advanced gaming modes. The C8K supports 4K at up to 144Hz, Variable Refresh Rate, Auto Low Latency Mode, AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and Dolby Vision gaming. A 1080p mode can be advertised at up to 288Hz, but this is a reduced-resolution PC feature rather than 4K/288Hz. Current consoles top out at 4K/120Hz.
One of the two high-bandwidth inputs also handles eARC. A household with two consoles, a gaming PC and an eARC soundbar may therefore need to prioritise sources or use a receiver or switch. HDMI cables and source settings must support the requested bandwidth. Enabling every enhancement can also change picture processing, so competitive gaming and film viewing may need separate presets.
Google TV provides major streaming applications, Chromecast, Google Assistant and broad device integration. It is more app-rich than some proprietary platforms, but home-screen recommendations and promotional rows can feel busy. UK catch-up availability should be checked at purchase because platform support evolves.
The C8K includes a substantial Bang & Olufsen-branded speaker system on larger versions, with Dolby Atmos and DTS support. It is fuller than basic television audio, but exact channel layout varies by size and does not replace the placement and bass of a separate surround system.
Ownership, value and verdict
Mini LED avoids the same permanent static-image ageing concern as OLED, making the C8K better suited to long news, sport, gaming-interface or desktop sessions. It is not maintenance-free: backlights can age, local-dimming behaviour can change through firmware, and large screens require substantial furniture, wall fixings and ventilation. Power consumption rises in very bright modes, and quoted peak brightness represents short highlights rather than constant full-screen output.
The C8K is the best choice in this category for buyers wanting very bright HDR, broad format support and a large screen without flagship pricing. Its weaknesses are two rather than four high-bandwidth HDMI inputs, occasional blooming, size-dependent specifications and picture settings that reward adjustment. LG C5 and Sony BRAVIA 8 II remain stronger for dark-room black precision and wide seating; the C8K is stronger for daytime impact and static-content resilience.
