Previous-generation position and fit
The WF-1000XM5 is now Sony's previous-generation flagship true-wireless earbud. Sony introduced the WF-1000XM6 in February 2026 with a newer processor, revised microphones and updated sound and noise-cancelling performance, so the XM5 should no longer be priced as the brand's latest technology. It remains a capable premium option, particularly when discounted, but buyers should compare the final checkout price with both the XM6 and newer rivals rather than relying on an old award badge or launch-era review.
Sony made the XM5 smaller and lighter than the XM4, but fit is still unusually dependent on the supplied noise-isolation tips. These foam-like tips can create an effective seal and improve bass and ANC, yet some users dislike their pressure, texture or maintenance demands. A poor seal reduces low-frequency sound and makes the noise cancelling work harder, while an oversized tip can become uncomfortable. Replacement-tip availability and cost therefore matter. Third-party silicone tips may improve comfort for some ears but can change isolation, sound, charging-case fit and Sony's intended acoustic behaviour.
Sound, codecs and active noise cancellation
The XM5 combines an 8.4mm Dynamic Driver X with Sony's processing and a detailed companion app. Its default sound is warm and full rather than strictly neutral, while the equaliser, Clear Bass control and personalisation tools allow meaningful adjustment. The earbuds support SBC and AAC for broad compatibility and LDAC on suitable Android devices for a higher-bitrate connection. LDAC does not automatically produce audible improvement: source quality, phone support, radio conditions and mastering still matter, and higher-bitrate modes can increase power use or connection instability. Apple devices use AAC rather than LDAC.
Noise cancellation remains a major strength, especially when the tips seal correctly. The system combines feedforward and feedback microphones with passive isolation to reduce steady transport and office noise. It cannot remove every voice, sudden impact or safety-critical sound, and wind performance depends on fit and settings. Ambient Sound and adaptive modes are convenient but should not be trusted as hearing protection or perfect situational awareness. On roads, platforms and shared public spaces, pausing playback or removing an earbud is safer than assuming microphones will reproduce every approaching vehicle or announcement accurately.
Battery, calls and everyday ownership
Sony advertises up to about eight hours of listening with noise cancelling active and roughly 24 hours including the charging case under specified conditions. Real endurance changes with LDAC, volume, call time, adaptive features, temperature, signal quality and battery age. Wireless charging is supported by the case, while USB-C provides the normal wired charging route. The sealed lithium-ion cells will gradually lose capacity, and neither the earbud batteries nor case battery is designed for ordinary user replacement. A heavily discounted older unit may therefore be less attractive if its manufacturing age or warranty is unclear.
Multipoint can connect the XM5 to two compatible Bluetooth devices, a useful advantage for switching between a laptop and phone. Behaviour still depends on codecs, apps and operating systems, and the highest-quality codec may not remain available in every multipoint arrangement. Call quality is usable and Sony applies voice-processing features, but outdoor wind and competing speech can still reduce intelligibility. Touch controls, speak-to-chat and automatic pausing are configurable, yet accidental triggers are possible. Buyers should update firmware and then disable clever features they do not actually use rather than accepting extra battery drain or unpredictable interruptions.
Durability, safe listening and verdict
The earbuds carry an IPX4 water-resistance rating, which is intended for splashes and sweat rather than immersion, swimming or a trip through the washing machine. The charging case is not a waterproof storage box and the contacts should be dry before the buds are returned. Tips and outer surfaces should be cleaned gently according to Sony's instructions; pushing debris into the sound outlet or using aggressive solvent can damage filters and materials. Earbuds should not be shared without suitable cleaning, and persistent itching, discharge or pain is a reason to stop use and seek appropriate medical advice.
The XM5 remains a strong discounted all-rounder for Android users who value LDAC, detailed app controls and standard multipoint, and for anyone whose ears suit Sony's isolation tips. It is less persuasive at close to XM6 pricing, for users wanting easily replaceable batteries, or for listeners who find foam tips uncomfortable. Strong ANC can make loud playback seem less aggressive, so begin at a moderate level and take regular breaks. Ringing, muffled hearing or pain after listening are warning signs; persistent symptoms warrant professional assessment.
