Sonos Roam 2 review
Overview and 2026 position
Sonos Roam 2 remains the compact portable entry point to the Sonos ecosystem, but its position changed in 2026 when the larger Sonos Play arrived with substantially longer battery life and greater output. Play does not make Roam 2 obsolete: Roam is much smaller, lighter and cheaper, and is still the model for bathrooms, bedside use, travel and small outdoor gatherings. It should no longer be described as Sonos's only or most capable portable smart speaker.
The second-generation Roam improved initial Bluetooth use by providing a separate Bluetooth button and allowing direct pairing before a full home Wi-Fi setup. Its deeper value still comes from Wi-Fi. On the home network it behaves like a Sonos room, supports Apple AirPlay 2, streams directly from services, uses automatic Trueplay tuning and can join grouped playback. Away from Wi-Fi it becomes a conventional Bluetooth speaker with fewer ecosystem features.
Sound, Wi-Fi and ecosystem limits
Roam 2 uses a tweeter and racetrack mid-woofer in a compact sealed enclosure. It produces clear speech and balanced sound for its size, but cannot match the scale or bass of Charge 6, ULT FIELD 3 or SoundLink Max. Automatic Trueplay adjusts the response as placement changes, provided the microphones and required network functions are available. The microphone array also supports Sonos Voice Control and Amazon Alexa in supported regions while connected appropriately. It is therefore the only genuinely smart Wi-Fi speaker in this comparison.
AirPlay 2 and Sonos multi-room operation require Wi-Fi. Two Roam speakers can be configured as a stereo pair for Wi-Fi playback, but Bluetooth stereo behaviour is not equivalent, and Roam 2 cannot be used as wireless rear surrounds for a Sonos soundbar. Sound Swap can hand playback to another Sonos speaker in supported situations, yet it depends on the ecosystem and app rather than generic Bluetooth.
There is no 3.5mm input, no phone-charging output and no high-power USB audio mode. Buyers outside the Sonos ecosystem may therefore pay a premium for features they rarely use.
Battery, charging and waterproofing
Sonos quotes up to ten hours of continuous playback. That is modest by 2026 standards: JBL and Sony advertise more than twice as long, while the newer Sonos Play claims a much longer day-scale figure. Roam 2's small battery is the price of its compact size. Volume, Wi-Fi activity, voice assistants, Trueplay processing, temperature and standby behaviour affect real use. Automatic sleep reduces drain, but a speaker left awake on Wi-Fi can still need charging sooner than a simple Bluetooth-only model.
Charging is through USB-C, and a compatible Qi wireless charger or Sonos magnetic charging base can be used, usually at a slower rate than a suitable wired supply. The charging base is normally an extra purchase. Roam 2 does not act as a power bank. Buyers should check whether the retail box includes only a cable and provide an appropriate mains adaptor if necessary.
The IP67 rating covers dust and temporary fresh-water immersion under test conditions. Roam 2 can survive accidents around a pool or bath, but it is not designed for underwater playback, prolonged salt exposure or charging while wet. Its end caps and compact shape are durable, though the relatively narrow base can be knocked over on uneven surfaces.
Value and verdict
Roam 2 is the best choice in this group for an existing Sonos household wanting the smallest speaker that moves seamlessly between home Wi-Fi and Bluetooth travel. It is also useful for AirPlay users who value compactness over maximum output. It is poor value for someone who only needs Bluetooth, long battery life or strong outdoor bass. UE BOOM 4 is tougher and lasts longer; JBL Charge 6 sounds larger and charges a phone; the 2026 Sonos Play is the better Sonos option for bigger spaces and all-day use.
The correct 2026 description is therefore current compact Sonos portable, not flagship portable. Its strengths are ecosystem integration, AirPlay, voice control and small size; its weaknesses are ten-hour endurance, premium pricing and dependence on the Sonos app and network for its best features.
