Panasonic Arc5 ES-LV97 review
Older Arc5 position and five-blade design
The Panasonic ES-LV97 is an older Arc5 generation rather than Panasonic's current premium showcase. It remains officially documented and may still appear through Panasonic or established retailers, but the range has moved on to newer Arc5 variants, the 2026 Arc5 Pro and six-blade Arc6 models. The LV97 is therefore a value proposition: its high-speed motor, five foils and automatic cleaning stand can still deliver a very close shave, but buyers should not pay a current-flagship price for hardware rooted in the 2020 generation.
Its head combines five arched cutting elements with 30-degree inner blades and a 14,000-cycles-per-minute linear motor, producing a claimed 70,000 cross-cutting actions per minute. The 16-direction Multi-Flex assembly is designed to maintain contact around the jaw and neck. Those specifications favour speed and closeness on short, relatively straight stubble. The broad head can feel bulky beneath the nose or around tight beard lines, and users with highly irregular neck growth may need deliberate changes of direction rather than simply pushing harder.
Shaving technique, wet use and skin comfort
Panasonic foil systems generally work best with short strokes against the grain and light, controlled pressure. The beard sensor varies power in response to hair density, but it cannot identify inflamed skin or prevent irritation caused by repeated passes. A close result on dense growth may still require pre-trimming if the beard has been left for many days. The integrated pop-up trimmer is useful for sideburns and reducing longer patches, although it is not a full beard-maintenance tool.
The ES-LV97 is washable and supports wet or dry shaving. Dry shaving is faster and makes missed areas easier to identify, while foam or gel may improve glide for some sensitive users. Whichever method is used, the head should be rinsed thoroughly and dried open. The shaver should be disconnected from mains equipment around water and used cordlessly for wet shaving. Claims about remaining stubble-free for a fixed number of hours come from controlled manufacturer testing and cannot account for individual beard growth rate, skin texture or shaving technique.
Cleaning station, battery and replacement parts
The included station charges and cleans the shaver using Panasonic detergent sachets. This can simplify daily ownership and remove sebum from the complex five-blade head, but it occupies counter space and creates a recurring detergent cost. Manual rinsing is a practical alternative, provided the foil and inner blades are cleaned without bending the delicate mesh. The station itself also needs periodic wiping and drainage maintenance; it is not a self-maintaining steriliser.
Panasonic specifies around 50 minutes of cordless use from a one-hour charge, a three-minute emergency charge and universal 100–240V input. The product page identifies WES9173 outer foil, WES9170 inner blades and WES9032 combined set for this generation. Availability and price should be checked before buying old stock because replacement parts determine whether a premium shaver remains economical. A dented foil, chipped blade or sudden increase in pulling is a reason to stop using the head rather than press harder.
Buying verdict and hygiene safeguards
The ES-LV97 is best for buyers who want an aggressive, close foil shave, prefer Panasonic's fast linear motor and find the package substantially cheaper than Arc5 Pro or Arc6. It is especially credible for daily or every-other-day users with dense facial hair. It is less suitable for people wanting the smallest travel shaver, those who regularly maintain longer beards, or buyers who dislike a wide head and cleaning-station consumables.
Electric shaving can reduce cuts compared with an exposed blade, but poor technique can still cause abrasion, folliculitis and ingrown hairs. Use clean equipment, avoid shaving repeatedly over broken skin and do not share foil heads. Cleaning fluid must be used as directed and kept away from children, flames and eyes. Persistent irritation, infected follicles or unexplained skin changes require appropriate healthcare advice. MainBuyer has not performed hands-on closeness, motor, irritation, battery or cleaning tests; this review synthesises Panasonic specifications, independent reporting and the July 2026 Arc5 range position.
