Overview and generation status
The LG UltraGear 27GS95QE-B is a 26.5-inch 2560 x 1440 WOLED gaming monitor from LG's 2024 generation. It combines a 240Hz refresh rate with near-instant OLED pixel response, excellent black levels and broad viewing angles. In 2026 it should be treated as previous-generation hardware because LG now offers newer 27-inch OLED models including the 480Hz 27GX790A and brighter or higher-resolution alternatives.
That older position does not make it poor. At a substantial clearance discount, 1440p at 240Hz remains a sensible balance for fast PC gaming because it is much easier to drive than 4K at 240Hz. Current consoles can also use high-refresh 1440p or 4K input modes subject to the monitor's supported timings and scaling, but buyers should verify the exact console mode rather than assuming every HDMI 2.1 feature behaves like a television.
OLED motion, image quality and text
OLED response is the main strength. Pixels change state far faster than conventional IPS or VA panels, producing clean motion with little trailing at 240Hz. Variable refresh support helps smooth frame-rate changes, while the low-latency design suits shooters, racing games and rhythm titles. Reaching 240 frames per second still depends on the game, CPU and graphics card; the refresh-rate number does not create frames that the computer cannot render.
Each pixel can switch off independently, so dark scenes have true blacks and no LCD backlight blooming. HDR highlights can look striking against darkness, but full-screen brightness is modest compared with Mini LED monitors and newer OLED generations. Automatic brightness behaviour can make large bright windows or white web pages appear less consistent than on an office IPS display. The matte coating reduces reflections but also gives bright content a slightly grainier appearance than a glossy OLED.
Text clarity is acceptable for gaming and mixed use rather than class-leading. The 1440p resolution at this size is not especially dense, and the WOLED subpixel arrangement can create coloured edging on fine text and high-contrast interface elements. Operating-system scaling, ClearType settings and viewing distance can reduce the effect, but they cannot change the physical subpixel layout. Users spending most of the day in documents or code may prefer a 4K LCD or newer high-density OLED.
Ports, HDR setup and practical limitations
The monitor provides DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.1 inputs, a USB hub and headphone output, but no USB-C video input or laptop charging. It is therefore designed around a desktop PC or console rather than a single-cable work laptop. There are no conventional built-in speakers, so audio requires headphones, desktop speakers or another connected system.
DisplayPort may use Display Stream Compression for the highest refresh and colour-depth combinations. DSC is designed to be visually lossless, but the graphics card, cable and driver must support it. HDMI bandwidth and console features also depend on source firmware. Updating the monitor and graphics driver is worthwhile because OLED gaming displays frequently receive fixes for HDR tone mapping, standby behaviour and input compatibility.
HDR setup is not automatic perfection. Windows HDR calibration, game-specific peak-brightness settings and the monitor's available HDR modes affect shadow detail and highlight clipping. A bright showroom preset can look dramatic while being less accurate. The 27GS95QE is best in a controlled room where its black level matters; strong ambient light can reduce perceived contrast and make the matte surface look washed out.
OLED care, warranty and verdict
Static interfaces can age OLED pixels unevenly. Taskbars, browser tabs, game HUDs and channel logos displayed repeatedly at high brightness create more risk than varied full-screen games. LG includes protection routines such as pixel cleaning, screen movement and static-element management. Keep them enabled, allow standby maintenance to complete and avoid switching the monitor off at the wall immediately after every session.
Warranty treatment of burn-in varies by country, retailer and date of purchase. A general multi-year warranty should not be assumed to cover permanent image retention unless the UK terms say so explicitly. Buyers should retain proof of purchase and check whether clearance stock starts a full new warranty. OLED cleaning also requires care: use the manufacturer's method, avoid pressure and do not spray liquid directly onto the panel.
The 27GS95QE remains compelling for discounted 1440p/240Hz OLED gaming. Its motion clarity and black levels are still excellent, but the absence of USB-C, modest full-screen brightness, lower text density and newer 480Hz rivals make full-price purchases difficult to justify. Buy it for fast varied gaming in controlled lighting, not as a static office monitor or because an old recommended retail price makes a clearance discount look larger than it really is.
