EcoAir DD1 Simple MK3 review
Overview and why desiccant matters
The EcoAir DD1 Simple MK3 is fundamentally different from the four compressor dehumidifiers in this category. It uses a rotating desiccant material to absorb moisture, then heats part of the airflow to release that moisture into the collection system. This allows useful extraction in temperatures down to around 1°C, where compressor coils spend more time defrosting and remove much less water. It is therefore aimed at garages, conservatories, caravans, basements and other cold spaces rather than being a direct like-for-like rival to a 20-litre compressor model.
Its quoted extraction is around 7.5 litres per day, with a compact two-litre tank and a slim body weighing roughly 6kg. Comparing that 7.5-litre number with a compressor's 20-litre headline is misleading because the test conditions and low-temperature behaviour differ. In a warm room, a compressor generally removes moisture more efficiently per unit of electricity. In a cold room, the EcoAir can continue working effectively while the compressor's real extraction collapses. Selecting the correct technology matters more than buying the largest number on the box.
Performance, heat and laundry
Independent testing highlights the DD1 Simple MK3's ability to reduce humidity and dry washing in cool conditions. The exhaust air is several degrees warmer than the intake because heat is part of the desiccant regeneration process. In winter this can make a conservatory or laundry room feel more comfortable and accelerate evaporation from clothes. In summer or an already warm bedroom, that same heat may be unwelcome. The unit also draws substantially more power than a small compressor model, especially on its highest setting.
Controls are deliberately uncomplicated, with selectable drying levels and laundry operation rather than app routines and detailed schedules. Simplicity makes it approachable and avoids Wi-Fi dependence, but buyers expecting a modern display, remote control or highly granular humidistat may find it basic. The fan and desiccant mechanism are audible, although low-mode figures are competitive. Laundry performance benefits from strong warm airflow, but the tank is small enough that heavy loads may require emptying unless continuous drainage is installed.
Running costs, safety and maintenance
Power consumption is the principal drawback. Depending on the mode, published figures and independent guides place the draw around 300W to 580W, considerably above efficient compressor machines operating in a heated room. Running cost must be calculated from the current tariff and expected duty cycle. The correct comparison is not simply watts, however: a low-power compressor doing little useful extraction at 5°C may run for far longer. In an unheated garage, the EcoAir's higher instantaneous draw can still be the more effective solution.
The filter requires routine cleaning and the water tank should not be left stagnant. Continuous drainage is useful, but the hose must follow the manual and rely on gravity. Because the outlet air is warm and the machine contains a heater, clearances and fire-safety instructions deserve particular attention; clothing must never be draped over the appliance. As with every dehumidifier, it manages airborne moisture rather than repairing water ingress. A garage roof leak or rising damp needs building work, not a larger dehumidifier.
Verdict
The EcoAir DD1 Simple MK3 is the specialist choice for cold, intermittently heated spaces. It is lighter than large compressor models, starts extracting effectively at low temperatures and produces warm airflow that is valuable for winter laundry. Its disadvantages are higher electricity use, a small tank and basic controls. Do not choose it for a normally heated living room merely because desiccant sounds more powerful; an Arete Two or Pro Breeze will usually be cheaper to run there. Choose it when the room regularly sits below the efficient operating range of compressor machines, because that is where its technology earns the premium.
