Dyson V15 Detect Absolute

A premium cordless vacuum with strong suction, automatic power adjustment and a hard-floor cleaner head that illuminates fine dust. It is particularly compelling for mixed floors and detail-focused cleaning, but it is heavier and more expensive than many rivals.

Dyson V15 Detect Absolute review

Overview and design

The Dyson V15 Detect Absolute remains an important premium cordless vacuum even though newer Dyson flagships have appeared. It established the combination of high suction, particle sensing and hard-floor dust illumination that now defines the company's Detect range. The Absolute package normally includes a carpet-focused Digital Motorbar head, a soft-roller Fluffy or Fluffy Optic head for hard floors, a Hair Screw tool and smaller dusting and crevice attachments. The machine uses a 0.77-litre bin, a removable battery and an LCD that estimates runtime while displaying the volume of particles counted by its piezo sensor.

At roughly 3kg with a main floorhead attached, the V15 is noticeably heavier than the V12 Detect Slim but easier to handle than the Gen5detect. It retains Dyson's older trigger arrangement, meaning the user must keep a finger pressed while cleaning. Some owners prefer the instant control, while others find it tiring over a long session. The engineering is generally excellent: connections are secure, the bin ejector is straightforward and the cleaner heads articulate well around furniture. The need to store two large heads is the price of its specialist approach.

Cleaning performance

The V15's cleaning performance remains competitive with much newer machines. On carpet, the motorised head combines strong suction with a brush bar designed to reduce tangling, while Auto mode adjusts power when the sensor detects heavier debris. On hard flooring, the green illumination is more than a novelty. It exposes fine dust along skirting boards, under furniture and on pale flooring where ordinary debris is difficult to see. Independent reviews continue to praise the V15 for removing pet hair, fine powder and everyday crumbs with few repeat passes.

The particle display is informative but should not be mistaken for a scientific assessment of indoor cleanliness. Its most practical role is to show when debris levels are falling and to support automatic suction changes. Boost mode is extremely powerful but drains the battery rapidly, so it is best reserved for concentrated patches rather than whole rooms. Eco mode stretches runtime but may feel underpowered on carpet. For most homes, Auto provides the right balance, with real runtime commonly falling below the headline 60 minutes once motorised tools and changing floor conditions are considered.

Ownership, maintenance and value

The V15 is easier to maintain than its technology-heavy appearance suggests. The filter and soft roller can be washed according to Dyson's instructions, the bin opens with a sliding ejector and the battery can be replaced. Hair can still lodge inside the bin or around the edges of tools, and the cyclone assembly should never be washed. The Hair Screw attachment is a genuine benefit for pet beds, stairs and upholstery, where a standard floorhead is unwieldy. Dyson's availability of official parts is reassuring, although the cost of batteries and specialised heads can be significant.

Value depends on the discount relative to the Gen5detect. At full historical pricing, the V15 was difficult to call economical, but it now often sits below the newest flagship while preserving most of the cleaning features that matter. It lacks the Gen5detect's power button, integrated crevice tool, longest runtime and enhanced HEPA specification, yet it is lighter and can perform just as convincingly in ordinary rooms. Buyers should compare the exact Absolute bundle because retailer-exclusive colourways and attachment packs can differ.

Verdict

The Dyson V15 Detect Absolute remains the best-balanced high-performance Dyson for many households. It cleans exceptionally well, makes hidden hard-floor dust visible, handles pet hair effectively and provides useful automatic power control. Its trigger, price and handheld weight are the main drawbacks, while the two-head system adds storage and swapping. Choose it over the Gen5detect when the price gap is substantial and over the V12 when bin capacity and carpet performance matter more than low weight. It is still excessive for occasional quick cleaning, but it remains a persuasive premium whole-home vacuum.
