Power banks for UK power cuts: capacity, cables and safety

A power bank is useful only if it is charged, compatible and accessible. Choose around your phones and cables rather than assuming the largest capacity number is the best buy.

Quick answer

Our recommendation in brief

A power bank is useful only if it is charged, compatible and accessible. Choose around your phones and cables rather than assuming the largest capacity number is the best buy.

Capacity and charging speed answer different questions

Capacity describes stored energy; wattage describes the rate at which compatible devices can receive it. A 20,000mAh label does not promise an exact number of full phone charges, because device batteries, voltage conversion, losses and phone use differ.

List the phones you need to support and test the actual cables. A USB-C connector alone does not guarantee every fast-charging mode. Keep a compatible spare cable with the pack, especially where older phones need another connector.

Shared power matters for families

Belkin BPB012 is a researched example with three output connections and a shared 15W ceiling. Multiple connected phones divide the available output; it is not 15W independently available to all three at once. Read the evaluation before comparing it with faster models.

Consider whether one shared bank is convenient or whether separate smaller banks would be easier to distribute. MainBuyer has not measured either option’s delivered energy, charging time or ageing.

Check recalls before using an old bank

The OPSS notice linked below identifies affected Anker A1681, A1689 and A1647 products. Those models are not shopping recommendations in this series. If you own one, follow the official notice and manufacturer recall process.

Inspect your exact model against current recall information, including any serial-number instructions. A familiar brand name or a working charge indicator does not establish that a particular unit is unaffected.

Know the limits

This is a phone-charging plan, not a guarantee that broadband, mobile networks or medical equipment will keep working. Powered medical devices need a specific backup plan agreed with their supplier or care team.

Follow the product’s charging and storage instructions. Keep the pack dry and accessible, and check its state of charge as part of your household inventory. Avoid leaving it forgotten in a hot car.

What to consider before buying

  • Check exact model and current recall guidance.
  • Test every required cable.
  • Keep capacity and output wattage separate.
