The Dyson V12 Detect Slim Absolute takes the most useful ideas from the larger V15 and packages them into a markedly lighter cordless vacuum. It is aimed at flats, smaller homes, stairs and users who find full-size premium sticks tiring. The platform includes a hard-floor illumination head, particle sensing, automatic suction adjustment, an LCD and a conventional power button rather than a trigger. At around 2.2kg in typical floor-cleaning form, it feels substantially easier to lift and steer than the V15 or Gen5detect.
The reduction in size affects every part of the machine. The floorhead is narrower, the bin is only about 0.35 litres and the wand and motor unit feel more compact. That makes it nimble around furniture and useful as a handheld, but the bin can fill quickly in a pet home or after a missed week of cleaning. The Absolute bundle generally provides both a Motorbar-style head for carpet and a soft illuminated roller for hard floors, plus a Hair Screw tool and detail attachments. As with other Dyson bundles, exact accessories should be confirmed with the retailer.
On hard floors the V12 is particularly convincing. The low-angle green light reveals fine dust, and the soft roller collects powder and small debris without the aggressive feel of a carpet brush. The lighter body encourages frequent use, which can matter more than theoretical maximum suction in a smaller home. Auto mode responds to particle load, and the display provides a clear runtime estimate. Independent reviews consistently find that its everyday pickup is strong despite having less maximum suction than the V15.
Carpet performance is good for the size but exposes the compromise. The smaller motor and head need more passes on heavily soiled or deep-pile carpet, and the bin may require emptying during a whole-home clean. The narrower head also covers less floor per pass. Boost mode can deal with stubborn patches but sharply reduces runtime. Dyson's headline runtime is achieved in Eco mode under favourable conditions; mixed flooring and powered heads reduce it. For a mostly hard-floor flat, these compromises are minor. For a large carpeted house, they become central.
The push-button operation is one of the V12's best ergonomic decisions because it removes the need to hold a trigger continuously. The small bin uses Dyson's sliding ejector, although compacted hair may still need encouragement. The filter and soft roller are washable, and the battery is detachable. The Hair Screw tool helps with upholstery and pet beds, but owners with several shedding animals may simply outgrow the small dirt capacity. Storage is easier than with a full-size Dyson, although the second floorhead still needs a home.
The V12 commands a premium price for a small vacuum, so its value depends on whether low weight is a genuine requirement. Cheaper machines can offer larger bins and longer practical runtime, while the V15 can cost only a little more during promotions. However, those alternatives are heavier. For older users, people with reduced upper-body strength, multi-storey homes or anyone cleaning stairs frequently, the handling advantage can justify the cost. It is less compelling for buyers who equate value with capacity or maximum power.
